WW2 VETERANS

Help find WW2 veterans for free Remembrance tours

The Royal British Legion wants to take all surviving veterans of the Second World War on a free Remembrance tour to where they served during their time in the Armed Forces.

Tours will take place throughout 2018 and will give WW2 veterans the chance to meet up with fellow veterans and pay their respects at battlefield sites, cemeteries and memorials.  The Treasury is enabling these free tours to be funded by Libor fines, and will enable the veterans to return with a family member and carer.

No database exists of WW2 veterans who are still alive today, so the Legion is asking the public to help us make sure every surviving veteran can take part.  If you’re a grandchild, neighbour or carer and know someone who fought in WW2, please tell them about this opportunity and encourage them to sign up!

For more information, please visit the Legion’s website using the following link:  https://www.britishlegion.org.uk/community/news/remembrance/help-us-find-ww2-veterans-for-free-remembrance-tours

Roy Bradshaw

This request was recived by Andy Vickers, ‘I happen to know the daughter and grand daughter of Roy Bradshaw and I have received a request from his grand daughter, Melisa, as follows;
I don’t know whether its possible, but if any of your colleagues have any memories of working with him, we’d be interested to hear them and possibly include a few anecdotes at his funeral (I’m not sure when it’ll be yet). He’d not talked about much of his police days, which is a shame as I would have liked to know more, but guess its part of the rules of the job! Its funny how we know our families, but there’s always another side to them at work which we never really know or hear about. He’d have retired by the time I was of an age I’d remember things!
I hope you can send this out to the membership. Melisa’s email address is melissa.tabecki@gmail.com

Funeral arrangements for Roy Bradshaw

The funeral for Roy is at 4.30pm on Friday 16 February 2018 at the Bramcote Crematorium.   Family flowers only.

Prior to joining the Police Roy enlisted in the Royal Navy at the age of 16 years having told the Officers he was 18.  In 1944 he was involved in Operation Overlord delivering tank landing craft to the Omaha Beach which was two days after his 18thbirthday.    In 2016 he received the Legion d’Honour from the French Government and was the youngest surviving person to receive it.

After the war in 1947 he joined the Army and then in 1949 he joined the County Police.     He served at Kimberley, Sutton in Ashfield, Barnby Moor, The Meadows and Beeston before retiring in 1974.

If you want to see more details about his Navy career, search for Roy Bradshaw and look for the Nottingham Post write up.

Widows and Widowers Pensions

At the meeting of the Joint Police Pension Board administered by Kier last Friday, I raised the issue of the enhanced survivors pension as promised and I will circulate the minutes when they are published.

However, to reassure members, Kier were able to confirm that they do have records of the options exercised in 1972 and 1990 for all fourteen pension schemes covered by the board.  I was also able to dip-test this with the co-operation of a member, who not only has an excellent memory, but also keeps comprehensive records and still had his original receipt from 1973 when he opted to upgrade his widows pension by payment of a lump sum; this check confirmed that the record was correct, and all the relevant information had been transferred to and recorded by Kier.

Since the e-mails sent by our NARPO Chief Executive (copies below), Keir have received over 1000 e-mails and telephone calls about this issue.  They will answer every query individually but have asked me to point out that the unprecedented demand will mean that they are likely to take longer than their normal two weeks to reply to some.  If any member has not already contacted Kier and is still concerned or wants confirmation of them upgrading their pre-1972 (male officers) or pre-1990 (female officers) survivors pension by paying a lump sum or increased contributions, please contact Kier via e-mail on: penmail@kier.co.uk,  the police pensions team would prefer members to use e-mail if possible, as the volume of telephone calls on this issue are causing them significant logistical issues.

I hope this assists and reassures members, if you have any further queries for the Pension Board, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Bruce.

Tom Varley

Reading the ‘welfare’ item on page 2 of the latest newsletter (issue 139) prompted me to contact you with details of my parents.  My father, Tom, a NARPO member is now 93 years old and because of illness has been unable to leave the house for some years.  Although my wife, son and I, together with my brother and his family visit and help my parents when possible, I wondered whether a different face may be refreshing.

Tom Varley, born 09/05/1924 served with Nottinghamshire as Constable and Sergeant (Sgt 236) from 1950 to 1979, retiring to take up as a civilian staff member before his final retirement in 1989.

He served initially at Nottingham, then transferred to the Combined Constabulary in 1954 where he served at Clipstone. On promotion in 1965 he moved to Sutton-in-Ashfield before taking up the role of Crime Prevention sergeant for Bassetlaw Division in 1967, a role in which he remained to the end of his service.
