Book of Condolence – Retired Officer – Peter Mee

I have received notification of the death of Retired Police Sergeant Peter MEE Ps1284 via his Son in Law (Retired Police Officer Kev TOBIN). I will use Kev’s words rather than my own.

His information is as follows:

It is with sadness that I find myself notifying you of the death of my father in law, retired Police Sergeant 1284 Peter Mee, who peacefully passed away at the Kings Mill Hospital at 3:20am on Friday 9th January 2026, aged 94 years. Peter was a NARPO member.

Peter is succeeded by his wife of 70 years Margaret (aka Betty), his daughters Janette and Elizabeth, his grandchildren Emma, Craig, Sarah and Adam and eight great grandchildren.

As a young man, Peter served in the Military Police during his National Service. On completion of his National Service Peter joined the Nottinghamshire County force in 1951 and served as a uniform officer across the County. Peter also served as a Traffic Patrol officer and motorcyclist.

Peter was also a member of the Force Underwater Search Unit.

Peter’s final posting was that of Advanced Driver Trainer at the Force’s Driving School at Epperstone Manor, retiring from there in November 1981.

Following retirement from the Force, Peter was employed as a chauffeur at Calverton’s Wrangler factory, and subsequently worked as a Stable Guard for the Jockey Club.

Peter was also a keen Bowls player and was the President of Nottinghamshire Bowls Association for a period of time.

Sadly, in his later years Peter suffered from Alzheimer’s and for the past few months was in residential care at the Berry Hill care home. It was from there that Peter was admitted to the KMH on Sunday 4th January 2026, where Peter’s daughters Jan and Liz remained with him until he passed.

There are no funeral arrangements, at this stage it is anticipated the family will have a non-attendance cremation.

I will notify you should there be any changes to that.

Kind regards,

Kevin Tobin.

Our thoughts are extended to the family at this very sad time.

  1. Regularly saw Peter whilst on courses at Epperstone. A character riding his motorcycle whilst in shirt sleeve order no matter what weather.Kim recalls the lunchtime volleyball sessions against Peter and the Traffic Dept whilst stationed at Epperstone. Our deepest sympathies to Liz and Kev.

  2. Peter was my Sgt on Police bikes in the mid 70s. A steady bloke who was always pleasant and approachable. Renowned for his lack of feeling the cold I’ll always remember when he gave me a test ride to join the section. Jacket order in the winters. I queried whether I needed an overcoat he replied no need. I’m still thawing out. Condolences to all family and friends.

  3. A valued and respected colleague who I first met in my very early days on Traffic. Those were the days of Joe Spence, Johnny Twigg, Roy Martin , Monty Wooley at West Bridgford Garage and. Billy Lamb and “Mac Windle” at Newark . Peter was renowned for shirt sleeve order and no goggles whatever the season. A grand bloke in all respects. Happy Memories. My commiserations to all the family.

  4. Hi Richard.
25 yrs retired ! That’s almost as long as your working career !
I can’t believe that it has been 14 yrs since I retired. Where has that time gone ?
Anyway you’re probably too young to remember this guy as well but it does seem that traffic officers have a good innings .
Yes, my Norwegian apparel has been put to good use over the past weeks but now it’s turned to rain so I will have to choose the days I wear them otherwise they will turn to a soggy mess 😀

  5. Very sad indeed to read Kevin’s message about Peter. I am one of the many he trained. I still have very fond memories of being a Cadet on that driving course in 1974.

Peter was always in short sleeves, regardless of the temperature with his trademark pen showing under the brim of his traffic cap.

His passing will I am sure invoke many similar memories in others.

RIP Peter and with very sincere condolences to all of the family.

  6. Very sad indeed to learn of Peter’s passing. A true gentleman and all round top, top man. I always remember the driving school playing volleyball at Epperstone and Peter was always in just his swimming trunks in all weathers, always brought a smile to my face.

RIP Peter and my sincere condolences to all family members.
