Book of Condolence – Retired Officer – Stanley Metcalfe

It is with sadness that I report the death of retired Police Constable 494 Stanley Arthur METCALFE who passed away yesterday the 18th February 2025 in the Queens Medical Centre after a short illness. He was 95years of age.

Stan joined the Police Service in February 1959 and retired in August 1984. Stan was a long time regular at Hyson Green and particularly out of Russell Drive  Police Station where I met and worked with him. Some would say he was one of those characters in life and he certainly was. You could probably write a book about some of his antics. He was one of the old time cops who would put on his helmet and rode his bike out of the Station only to be seen some 8 hours later when he pedalled back in again.

He leaves his long term partner Sheila.

Stanley Arthur METCALFE (Stan) Retired Police Constable 494 sadly passed away on the 18th February 2025. He was 95yrs of age.

His funeral arrangements are as follows:

A Cremation Service will take place at Bramcote Crematorium, Coventry Lane, Bramcote, Nottingham at 12.30pm Wednesday 26th March 2025. The family would welcome friends and former colleagues to attend should they wish to do so and to pay their respects.

The undertakers are Julie WESSON Funeral Services of Beeston, Nottingham.

Our thoughts and condolences are extended to the family at this very sad time.

  1. A lovely man. He showed me round the beat in early 1960. I bought my very first car from him in 1962. It was a 1936 Hillman Minx deluxe saloon for which I paid £10. The first time I saw it, the engine was missing and it was jacked up on blocks outside his house. I certainly had my £10’s worth. rIp Stan.

  2. If I remember correctly Stan lived Wigan Road area early in service and story goes that he was cycling home after duty and it was extremely foggy. He rode along Western Boulevard and up Beechdale Road. When he arrived home he was confronted by rather irate motorists demanding their whereabouts as they had followed him for safety and had no idea where they were ! Originally on Northern myself I saw Stan quite often and always found him to be a nice friendly man

  3. So sad to hear of the passing of Stan. He was a true character. Stan was very proud of his employment as a fireman on the railway, prior to joining the Police. A number of stories could be told about Stan’s time at Russell Drive(where I first got to know him). As is known Stan much preferred to be out on the bike instead of a Panda car. On one particular shift Stan came out of a house and began riding his bike, along Bracebridge Drive at Bilborough. He suddenly said to himself, “Why am I riding my bike in my flat cap?” He had taken an Insurance collector’s bike and left the Panda car on Hoylake Crescent. A quick about turn and no-one was any wiser. Good old Stan. May you rest in peace. Steve ELEY ex Pc 1403
