Book of Condolence – Retired Officer – John Williams

It is with sadness that I report the death of Retired Detective Sergeant 85 John Forester WILLIAMS 87yrs who sadly passed away on the 30th January 2025 at his Mapperley home following a heart related illness.

John actually joined the Cheshire Police originally, but in October 1956, following a family move to Nottinghamshire he joined the Nottingham City Police working from Central Police Station. Throughout his service he remained in the City but did spend a considerable period on the No.3 Regional Crime Squad. He ended his service back at Central in the Rank of Detective Sergeant.

John was a keen sportsman and would take on many sports including football, but his great love was Rugby Union at which he was a formidable player, playing for the Force on numerous occasions.

He leaves his wife Shirley, son Mark, daughters Lesley and Jo, and two grandchildren.

The funeral is at Gedling Crematorium, Catfoot Lane, Lambley at 3pm this Friday afternoon 28th February 2025 at 3pm. There will be a Celebration of his Life afterwards at Mapperley Golf Club, Central Avenue, Mapperley.

John’s son Mark has asked that people attending do not dress sombrely and if possible can you please wear a daffodil. Anyone wishing to speak at the Celebration of Life will be welcome to do so especially if you have funny stories of John.

Mark is still looking for a bearer for his Dad’s coffin if someone is willing to assist but you need to be 5’11 to 6′ tall.

For those of you who would wish to attend but cannot for whatever reason the service will be live streamed.

  1. I worked with John at Canning Circus CiD in the 70s. He was a very good Detective, and I learned a lot from him. We also played football for the CiD on Sunday mornings, not much got past John. I think he put his Rugby into it sometimes. A true gentleman, who I met a few times going round Antique fairs with his wife Shirley.

    Rest in peace John.

I think at times his Rugby took over. We also did Tug of War together. Great times. I met him and Shirley at Antique fairs over the years, he never altered. A true gentleman.
    Rest in Peace John.

  4. John was great Ds who always had time for younger inexperienced colleagues which was rare in his era. A lovely man who also ran the Central CID Sunday league football team. I think he finished Larry Lloyd,s career when Larry turned up one Sunday to play for us and John put him on the bench. RIP John.

  6. One of nature’s true gentlemen. I had the pleasure of working on the same section as him from 1971 to 1975 on the No3.District Regional Crime Squad. First class detective. Never lost focus, always the same quiet efficient manner. Got the job done his way which, always seemed to work. Loved his sport and ran the Crime Squad Football Team. Proud to call him a friend. Our lives were richer for knowing him. Rest in peace John Forester. One of the very best.

He was a very thorough investigator, and I learned from him.We played Sunday morning football for Canning, John used some Rugby knowledge in most games. We also did Force Tug of War together. All in all, a great guy. Used to see him, and Shirley round the Antique Fairs, and still had time to talk.

  8. John was such a gentleman who did outstanding work when I worked with him on the Regional Crime Squad. Together with Eddie Morley they were the catalyst which brought about the arrest of many target criminals in various parts of the country. He galvanised team spirit both on and off the field with his Sunday morning football team. It was always a pleasure to be part of his team. His passing is a sad loss. Thank you for your service John.
