Book of Condolence – Retired Officer – Julian Smith

This is a very early notification and I have little information at this time but I have been informed of the sad death of Retired Police Superintendent Julian Russell SMITH 77yrs who sadly passed away late yesterday the 16th December 2024. As soon as I am able to speak to family and report fully I will update members accordingly.

Julian Russell SMITH sadly passed away on the 16th December 2024. It is well known that he had suffered Parkinson’s Disease for some years which had recently been aggravated by the onset of dementia removing his ability to get about completely.

Julian joined to Police Service in January 1969 and retired in the Rank of Superintendent in June 1997. Throughout his Police Service, in the various ranks he served at Beeston, The Meadows, Central, Mansfield, Clifton and Vice Squad and other locations. Those that knew would tell of his love of buying and selling anything quirky.

He leaves his wife Margaret, daughters Natalie and Katie and 3 Grandchildren.

  1. Very sad to hear of Julian’s passing especially with the very difficult health issues in his latter years. Always a happy, energetic man with much enthusiasm. Always well respected. I remember him especially for his roles in the City and a far from easy post at Community Affairs before his retirement. I still remember him one morning at HQ, showing me the in-car fridge in his Vauxhall Senator! Good days. RIP Julian and with sincere condolences to your family.

  2. Another sad loss.

Julian was one of my Inspectors on the Vice Squad in the 80s. An excellent staff manager.Always friendly and approachable. I paticularly remember this time of the year when Julian would buy up any old children’s cycles he could get his hands on then repair them and sell them on for massive profits.(or so he told us).

It was a pleasure to have known you Julian. Rest in Peace.

  3. Julian was a cracking gaffer to have , as he was on the Vice Squad. Very knowledgeable, and led without having to impose himself. A sad day to hear of his passing. RIP

  4. Julian and I first met when we were Sgts on Royce Kirrhams section at Central in the early 70’s. Our paths crossed many times professionally and socially after that.

A highly intellegent man with a quick mind, Juilian always had a positive, optomistic outlook. He had an impish sense of humour. He was someone with whom it was always a pleasure to be in his company.

The diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease so soon after retiring came as a shock to all of us. Despite this he tried to remain positive and fight it as best as he could.

My sympathies go out to his wife Margaret and daughters Natialie and Katie.

My only consolation is that he is at last free of the pain and discomfort of such a debilitating illness. I hope his family may soon feel able to recover from their ordeal at witnessing the slow, invevitable decline of their loved one.

    My deepest sympathies.

    Ray Stone.

  8. Julian was my Sergeant at Central uniform and later on the Vice Squad. Then my Inspector at Hamilton House some years later. A dynamic man full of energy with a fantastic sense of humour. I can remember him stock piling any booze on offer when he managed Central bar. Condolences to all family and friends he will be missed by many.
