Book of Condolence – Retired Officer – Harold Eric Kitchen

A number of you will already be aware of the sad death of Retired Police Officer (Pc1287) Harold Eric KITCHEN. Eric sadly passed away after a long illness on the 21st April 2024  aged 87 years. He leaves his wife Rosemary, daughter Melanie and son Tim.

Eric joined the Police Service in August 1958 and retired in August 1988. It is my understanding that he was one of the original Retford traffic officers and prior to his retirement was the office man at Ollerton Traffic Wing.

Should any of his friends or former colleagues with to pay their respects there will be a Funeral Service on Thursday 9th May 2024 at 11am at All Hallows Church, Ordsall, Retford, Nottinghamshire DN22 7TP. The family would welcome friends and former colleagues should they wish to attend.

Our thoughts and condolences are extended to the family at this very sad time.

  1. I was on Worksop Traffic from 1968 to 1974,and our paths crossed many times, especially dealing with road accident, he was very efficient and good at his job. Easy to get on with and had a good sense of humour. He was also part of the Bluenotes Police band together with Tony Saddington, Gordon Smallman and I think one other ,can’t recall who it was. They performed at many of Police parties, very entertaining. R I P Eric. Commiserations to his family and friends. John ( Foxy) Fowler, 925

  3. I worked with Eric at Ollerton Traffic Wing forty years ago, when he was towards the latter end of his service and working as the office man. He was always pleasant and very easy to get on with – an absolute gentleman. I am saddened by his passing and send my condolences to his family.

  4. Eric was a very likeable man & as a young probationer at Retford he gave me great advice taken from his wide experience of the Police Force and what mattered. His side kick was Pete Sanders and to play against them at snooker was almost impossible. The barracking before you played a shot was hilarious but good natured. I remember Eric with great fondness and my Police father figure. They don’t make ’em like that any more. He was a credit to the Force.

  5. My condolences to Eric’s family. I played second cornet with Eric in the Police Band. On a Sunday morning we would dash down the 614 to Central in the Traffic Zephyr 6 together with Tony Saddington the drummer. ‘re previous the other member of the blue notes was Tony Moss on keyboard. A great bloke and colleague.

  6. I was on Bassetlaw Traffic in the late 70s and worked with Eric. He was one of the “Old Style Traffic Officers” who had inspired me to apply for the Department and this period was one of the best of my service, due to Officers like Eric and his contemporaries. RIP Eric. Condolences to his family.
