Book of Condolence – Retired Officer – George Harper

It is with sadness that I report the death of Retired Police Inspector George Frank HARPER who sadly passed away at his Bedford home on the 21st February 2024 only 5 days short of his 101st birthday. George was a widower, his wife Ivy having passed away in 2012.

An amazing piece of history in George’s past life was that he was conscripted into the Army to serve in the Second World War. After the war was over George joined the Police Service until his retirement in 1981. George served on the old Mechanised Division before amalgamation and subsequently at Nottingham Traffic Wing thereafter. Later in service he also served at Carlton and Newark until retirement.

He leaves his daughter Jane and Grandson Jonathan.

There will be a Cremation Service for George to be held at Bedford Crematorium at 2.30pm Thursday 21st March 2024. The family would welcome anyone to attend who would wish to pay their respects but fully appreciate the distance to travel, the weather and time of year, and because of his age they appreciate that not many of his former colleagues will still be around.

The undertakers are Neville’s Funeral Services of Bedford.

Our thoughts and condolences are extended to the family at this very sad time.

  2. I met George HARPER in 1958 when I joined Central Division. I served with him on Nottingham City Traffic in the 1960s until amalgamation in 1968 when the office was split into 3 sections. I was sent to Hucknall and some to West Bridgford and some remained at Guildhall garage. My career followed Cid and Regional Crime Squad work and I did not see George much but attended reunions when possible. I enjoyed my time, working with George who was a pleasure to be with and always ready to help younger Officers. Condolences to his family.
