| NOTTINGHAMSHIRE NARPO Charles Gordon Atherley It is with sadness that we have to inform you of the death of Charles Gordon Atherley, aged 88 years, a retired Police Officer. Gordon as he was known, died on Thursday 9 December 2021. Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time. . The funeral as yet to be arranged and details will be sent our once they are known along with his photograph. Gordon joined the County Force in 1961 and served at Hucknall, Retford Traffic and Ollerton Traffic. He retired in 1988. His wife Jacqueline died in 2015. I realise now how fortunate I was in 1985 to join a proud and professional shift at TD(O). Supervised, protected and shepherded by Gordon and surrounded by such good men we had the ‘best of times’.

RIP Gordon, truly a great character, one that had an enormous influence on me as a young Constable. You were Botha colleague and friend, not just to me but to my family as well. What a team we had a Retford Traffic and you were a huge part of that.

Good old Gordon, the salt of the earth. I well remember the time when he took an HGV to the weighbridge thinking it was overweight, turned out the wagon was loaded with straw. One of the best. Rest in peace.

Jennifer and I worked with Gordon when we moved to Retford on our marriage. He went out of his way to make us welcome and was a means of support throughout our three year stay
there. He was undoubtedly a character, always cheerful and full of surprises; for example,
on one occasion he threw the Construction and Use Regulations at a travelling fairground
owner as the fair left Retford Market Place onto the public road. This caused quite a stir and for a while became part Retford’s history. Our paths crossed later in our careers and he remained
the same ‘ happy go lucky ‘ man. A pleasure to have worked with Gordon and our
sincere condolences to his family.

I worked frequently with Gordon when the Force had a proper Traffic Division – he being at Retford and me at Worksop. We assisted each other at many incidents – some very serious. He was truly a professional officer, a real character and was possessed with a good sense of humour. Nothing was too much trouble for him if he could help or advise. He was a fine man and well respected by all who knew him. RIP Gordon – you were one of the best.

Gordon-The best shift sergeant I ever had on Traffic. Always supportive, always cheerful and helpful, called a spade a spade and always backed his men up, but always full of humour and a fund of funny stories, RIP old friend

Deeply saddened to hear of Gordon’s passing.
A traffic officer of the ‘Old School’, whose long experience and sage advice was sought
and appreciated by many of us.
His sense of humour and natural exuberance could always be relied upon to brighten up the workplace.
Yes, he would often speak of things as he saw them but underneath a [sometimes] tough exterior there beat a heart of gold.
