  3. RIP John. You were one of several people that was from an era before mine but your love of sport made us friends. I recall seeing you at so many Police football matches with John Stapleford and Bob Fawsitt etc and the support you gave me I will always remember. As a National PPA winner you achieved something many never did and for that alone I have the utmost respect. It was a privilege knowing you.

  5. Sad news. A great goalkeeper and organiser/supporter of many police football reunions. Member of the 1968 PAA Nottinghamshire Police team which won the National competition. Slowly losing the side. Even for a County bobby you were really accepted by the City lads. A commanding figure in all aspects of your work and play. I never heard you swear.

  7. John and I were Cadets at the same time in 1956. Although I never worked closely with him I knew him throughout my service and often received his support at incidents. Always helpful, friendly and a well respected man. I know he will be sadly missed.

  8. My husband, ex-dog handler, P.C. 853 Dan Wallace, & I lived next door in Mansfield to John, June & family in the late 1960’s. when our families were young. John was not only my Dan’s Dog training Sergeant but he was a valued & much respected friend. Our friendship lasted beyond retirement. John was a lovely cheerful helpful man both on & off the job. We shared lots of social events together like Anniversaries & Police social functions. We were privileged to have been part of his & his families life. My thoughts are with his boys, Mark, Paul & Nigel & his daughter Dawn & send heartfelt sympathy at this sad time. Rest in peace John. You & June are now reunited together. Xxxx

  10. Spent many years with John on the Dog Section as well as a partner on the tennis court, not many people would have got me permission to play a tennis match on the day of my sons christening. It was the last match of the season and we needed to win to get promotion, we did and fortunately I got back in time. Great times, thank you!

Knew John through Mark and Nigel when he supported them at football latterly when I was refereeing them, he always had a kind word for me, and used to see him shopping at Sainsburys in Arnold when he always had time for a polite chat. 16. Played with John in the Notts Police football team from 1959 onwards. His abiltiy as a
goalkeeper attracted the attention of Forest for who he played in their professional ‘A’ and ‘B’
teams. Worked with him on the beat at Newark from 1961. His image as a Police Officer mirrored that as a sportsman as being solid and reliable. Was the father to a wonderful
family of which I had dealings with Mark and Nigel after my retirement. My thoughts are
with his family at this time. R.I.P.

  20. So sorry to hear of the passing of John and indeed June.

John and I were friends from knowing each as Cadets in the mid 1950’s. Our two families moved to Mansfield on the same weekend in early 1963 to be the first two dog handlers in ‘The Borough.’ Living next door to each other. We were good pals at work, socially and into the many sports interests we enjoyed.

Gillian and June were good friends and our eventual seven children all ran around together together plus two GSD’s. After seven years I moved on to Derbyshire but John and I still maintained contact through Badminton. Good friends with many happy memories. Our sincere thoughts go to Dawn and the boys.
