Book of Condolence – Retired Officer – Barrie Yates

Notification of the death of a retired Officer

Barrie Yates

It is with sadness that we have to inform you of the death of Barrie Yates, aged 89 years, a retired Police Officer.    Barrie died on Saturday 21 November 2020.    Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.

Barrie joined the County Force in 1951 and began his career at Eastwood.     He also served at Headquarters, Crime Prevent and other stations and departments.  He retired in 1982 as a Chief Inspector.

A photograph will be place on our website as soon as we get one.

Hello Hazel.  So sorry to hear about Barrie.  We remember with fondness the times we had at Lowdham and Epperstone.  Love and best wishes Jill and John Pepper.

  1. I was a cadet in HQ CID at Epperstone when Barry was stationed there in 1964. He was a real character and along with D/Sgt Jack Heath patiently showed me what policing was about both from an operational perspective and from a more social aspect. Interesting times indeed.

  2. Similar to the comments made by Bob Thompson, I was also a cadet stationed in HQ (CID) at Epperstone – but in 1962. Barry was also stationed there as a DC and I found him very efficient and helpful. He was a very jovial character and, together with his wife, often assisted in the various social events organised at that time by Joe Smalley and ‘Skip’ Merry. Although our paths never crossed again during my service I never forgot those early days and it is sad to hear of his passing.

  3. Will always remember him arriving at a crime scene with his magnifying glass. Possessed
unbelievable skill as a crime scene analyst. Member of a team of top officers at HQCID
in the early 60s. RIP Barry
