Book of Condolence – Retired Officer _ James Smedley

James Ernest SMEDLEY (Jim) sadly passed away on the 14th December 2024. He was aged 96yrs.

Jim had been a widower since 2017 when his wife Jean sadly passed away after a long illness. They had been happily married for 64years and Jim had cared for his dear wife as in later life she had become the victim of dementia, right up until her sad passing. Apparently Jim had held a driving licence and was still driving until just before his death. He passed away at his Stapleford home after a very short illness.

Jim served in the Military before his Police Service. He joined the 17th/21st Lancers and served in Palestine. He was awarded the GSM (General Service Medal).

After the Military he joined the Police Service in September 1952 and as his family report, he served almost everywhere. He retired in the Rank of Chief Superintendent in May 1988.

Jim leaves daughters Jill and Pam, 5 Grandchildren and 6 Great Grandchildren.

His funeral arrangements are as follows:-

A Cremation Service will take place at 1.00pm Friday 17th January 2025 at Bramcote Crematorium, Coventry Lane, Bramcote, Nottingham NG9 3GJ. Thereafter there will be a Celebration of his Life to be held at The Nurseryman Public House, 177 Derby Road, Beeston, Nottingham NG9 3AE.

The family would welcome friends and former colleagues to attend and pay their respects should they so desire.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Nottingham University Hospital Charity on the day or via the undertakers GILLOT’s Funeral Directors of 136 Derby Road, Stapleford, Nottingham  NG9 7AY.

Book of Condolence – Retired Officer – Maurice Herring

It is with sadness that I report the death of Retired Police Officer Maurice HERRING 85yrs who sadly passed away yesterday the 18th November 2024 at his Sutton in Ashfield home after a long illness. 

Maurice joined the Police Service in May 1967 and retired in the rank of Acting Chief Inspector in January 1994. He served in many place including Sutton in Ashfield, Mansfield, Worksop, Newark, Kirkby in Ashfield, West Bridgford and the Special Operations Unit. Maurice also served two periods at the District Police Training Schools at Pannal Ash and Dishforth.

He leaves his wife Brenda Mary, two children, Matthew and Alison and 4 grandchildren, Annie, Toby, Emma and James.

Book of Condolence – Retired Officer – Carl Jackson

It is with sadness that I report the death of Retired Detective Chief Inspector Carl Thomas JACKSON 88yrs who passed away yesterday the 2nd December 2024 at his Chilwell home, after a short illness.

Prior to his Police Service Carl had been a Mineworker. He joined the Nottingham City Police in July1962 and retired in the Rank of Detective Chief Inspector in August 1992. During his Police career Carl had served at Central, Canning Circus and also at HQ on the then Complaints and Discipline Department.

He leaves his widow, Margaret, Children Lynne and Ivan, Grandchildren Sophie and Oliver and Great Grandchildren Ellis, Jensen, Harvey, Willow and Violet.

There will be a Church Service to be held at 11am Tuesday 7th January 2025 at Christ Church Methodist, Derby Road, Long Eaton NG10 4NE. This will be followed by interment at Chilwell Cemetery, Field Lane, Chilwell, Nottingham NG9 5FF

Thereafter there will be a Celebration of his Life which will be held at Chilwell Manor Golf Club, Queens Road, Beeston, Nottingham.

The family would welcome friends and former colleagues to attend any or all of the above should they wish to do so and pay their respects.

The Undertakers are A.W. LYMN Funeral Services of Beeston, Nottingham.

Donations to the benefit of the British Heart Foundation and the RNLI can be made on the day via the Undertakers.

Book of Condolence – Retired Officer – Peter Brooks

It is with sadness that I report the death of Retired Police Inspector Peter BROOKS 84yrs who sadly passed away at his Arnold home on the 23rd November 2024. Peter or Brooky as he was often known was a widower, his wife Dorothy having passed away during the Covid Pandemic in 2019.

After leaving school Peter did his National Service visiting both Beirut and Iran. After his National Service he was employed by Rolls Royce of Derby and Raleigh Industries in Nottingham. He joined the Nottingham City Police in October 1965 and retired in the Rank of Inspector in October 1995. During his Police career he served at Central, Canning Circus, Mansfield, Kirkby in Ashfield and the Special Operations Unit.

He leaves children Caroline, Diane and Peter and grandchildren James, Charlotte, Arron, Amy and Amanda.

A Cremation Service will take place at Gedling Crematorium, Catfoot Lane, Lambley, Nottingham on Thursday 19th December 2024 at 4pm. Thereafter there will be a Celebration of his Life to be held at The Lambley Public House, Lambley Village from 5pm the same day.

The family would welcome friends and former colleagues to attend and pay their respects should they wish to do so.

Book of Condolence – Retired Officer – James Staples

I have heard from several sources of the sad death of Retired Police Constable James (Jim) STAPLES Pc1073 (93yrs) who I am given to understand was the Edwinstowe Beat Officer for many years.

Jim served between September 1954 and retired in October 1983.

At this time I am having problems contacting a family member but I believe he has a daughter who reported his passing. If anyone can help to identify his daughter and point her in my direction I would be most grateful.

I am aware that his funeral is to be held at Ollerton Crematorium on Thursday 19th December 2024 at 1pm.

Death of Police Widow.

It is with sadness that I report the death of Police Widow Sylvia Ruth YOUNG 88yrs who passed away at her Huthwaite home on the 25th October 2024 after a long illness .

Sylvia was the wife of Sgt Joseph Barrymore YOUNG ( Barry) a Sergeant at Sutton in Ashfield who passed away in 2003.

Sylvia leaves children Linda, Carol, Phillip and Paul.

Her Cremation will take place at 3pm Friday 22nd November 2024 at Mansfield Crematorium Newstead Chapel, Derby Road, Mansfield.

It is with sadness that I report the death of Mavis PHILLIPS 89yrs who sadly passed away at her Ruddington home on the 16th October 2024.


Mavis was the widow of Supt John Phillips who passed away in 2023.


Her funeral will take place at 1.15pm Monday 11th November at Rushcliffe Oaks Crematorium. The family would welcome friends and former colleagues to attend and pay their respects should they wish to do so.

NARPO ANNUAL DINNER 2024

Dear member

It is that time of year again when I organise the Annual Dinner.

This year the Dinner will take place at 1pm on Friday 6th December 2024 at the Stadium Leisure Centre, Nottingham Road Basford,

The menu has not yet been finalise but it will be 3 courses of a starter, a Traditional Xmas Lunch, with an option and vegetarian option, and a dessert, 

The tables are set out in 8 per table.

The cost will be as in previous years at £15 per person. all cheques should be made payable to Notts NARPO

It you have already responded to the newsletter you do not need to rebook.

Once the menu has been confirmed it will be distributed for attendee to make their menu choices

It is with regret that I have to inform you of the death of a Police Widow Edna J Rose that occurred13th September 2024,

Edna was the widow of William Terrence Rose who died a number of years ago.

We have no other details at the present time but are now in communication with her Son and so will update at a later date.
