After the Military he joined the Police Service in September 1952 and as his family report, he served almost everywhere. He retired in the Rank of Chief Superintendent in May 1988.

  1. Jim was the Superintendent on Force Support when I served on the Vice Squad. He would regularly pop into the office and sit and chat and have a drink with us(tea/coffee). Never afraid to mash or make the coffee. A complete gentleman in every way. Sad to hear of his passing.

  2. Jim was a gentleman, kind, sympathetic, patient, never one to lose his temper or take advantage of other, less fortunate individuals.

He was a devoted family man who cared for his wife Jean until the very end. They were happily married for 64 years.

Having experienced the formidable challenges of looking after someone suffering from dementia for so long he was only too willing to help and advise those of us placed in a similar position.

For his timely help and advice I will always be eternally grateful. He will be sadly missed.

My sympathies are extended to his family.

    Ray Stone.

Retired Insp. Central Div, City Police.

  3. Having joined in the mid seventies my first experience of ‘Mr Smedley’ was when he was deputy Div Commander at Central. He had a real genuine presence as a senior officer and really warmed when you were in conversation with him. Always caring and he always wanted to know about you, your family and hobbies etc. That caring touch so obvious in the later care of his late wife. No one was surprised when he was promoted Chief Super. RIP and my condolences to your family.

  4. I knew Jim Smedley throughout my service from DC to Superintendent. I always found him friendly and easy to work with. He was good company at social events and that is where we also became friendly with Jean. I send my condolences to all the family.

  5. I knew Jim Smedley throughout my service from DC through to Superintendent. I always found him easy to get on with and to work with. In the early days he was a very effective detective and in later years an equally effective uniformed Superintendent. Socially I enjoyed his company and it was through social events that I met Jean. I send my sincere condolences to all his family.

  6. One of the calmest and determined persons I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and a loyal colleague . I shall always be grateful to him for the sound advice he offered me in connection with my dear late wife’s brutal illness. He had had the same experience as myself. My sincere condolences to all the family.
