  1. I knew John from childhood when we lived in Arnold. I met him years later again in 1984 when we met during the miners strike.

He was always a true gentleman and very genuine.

A very sad loss. My condolences to his family.

  2. A very nice man indeed, a hard but fair taskmaster and a very good boss. His grit and determination and the love of his wife and family saw him through some very serious health challenges in the early 90s. He recovered well to resume work. RIP to John and sincere condolences to his family.

  7. I didn’t know John until I was posted to Headquarters in the late 70’s but only then at a distance. I really got to know him when he was Ass Chief Constable and I worked in Personnel. He had high standards and was firm but fair. The Force went through a difficult period in respect of “Equal Opportunities” and needed to undertake a “Cultural change.” John was very supportive and forward thinking. At that time he suffered a serious illness and the way he tackled and overcame it was an inspiration. Since his retirement my wife and I have kept in touch with Gill and John – particularly through his recent illness. Condolences from us both to Gill and family.

    RIP
