Book of Condolence – Retired Officer – Alan Linley

Retired Police Inspector Allan LINLEY sadly passed away in hospital on the 18th May 2024. Having now spoken to his family I am able to update with some information and funeral arrangements.

Sadly his start date is still unknown but he retired from the Nottinghamshire Police in the late 1980’s. He was 78 yrs at the time of his death.

He served at Beeston as both Constable and Sergeant and also as a Sergeant at Beeston. For a time he was the Force Firearms Officer and also served at Headquarters as Inspector and Force Control Room Inspector. In 1978 he was the Staff Officer for the then Chief Constable Charles Mc LAUGHLIN.

Allan was quite the sportsman attending the Southwell Athletics Club and he was an active member of the Force Rugby team and was described as quite a handy scrum half.

Allan was a widower, his wife Susan having died in November 2021. He leaves two daughters Emma and sister Sarah.

A Cremation Service will take place at The Rushcliffe Oaks Crematorium, Main Road, Stragglethorpe, Nottingham NG12 2PY at 10.45am Monday 3rd June 2024. Afterwards there will be a Celebration of his Life commencing at 11.45am the same day to be held at The Rushcliffe Golf and Country Club which I understand is near to the Crematorium

The family would welcome friends and former colleagues to attend should they wish to pay their respects.

Our thoughts and condolences are extended to the family at this very sad time.

I have been asked to query the location of the Celebration of Life for Allan. I have spoke to his daughter and she has confirmed that it is at The Nottinghamshire Golf Club (Formerly) Cotgrave Golf Club which is the one near to the Crematorium apparently. Not as previously described.

Emma (Daughter)has also asked that if it is your intention to attend the Celebration of Life, for catering purposes, can you drop her a line by email at em2498@hotmail.co.uk

Kind regards

  1. Bob. I believe Alan was my first Sgt at Bingham. You have not included any information that Alan served at Bingham which would confirm my belief. Nor have you included his collar number or a photograph. Is this an error? Regards. Nigel ShawSent from my Galaxy

  2. So very sad to hear of Alan’s passing. He was my shift Inspector at the Meadows (Station Street) as a very young newly promoted Sergeant in 1981. He was a quiet, considered but very able man indeed. One of the older school of very respected senior officers who went on to hold very responsible posts at HQ. RIP Alan.

  3. Remember Allan well from Police Rugby as the dreaded treasurer who came round after the game collecting subs. Also met up with him when he worked as Enforcement Officer with British Waterways after his retirement when I was with Notts County Council. A very straight up honest chap who was well respected. Condolences to all family and friends.

  5. Worked with Allan for a short while in the force and then met again when he retired and joined us at British Waterways as a Patrol Officer when he worked alongside Steve Cropper (RIP). What a lovely guy, always well turned out and perfect for such an enforcement/ambassadorial role and well liked by everyone who worked with him. Had a few catch up coffees when he finally retired and although he sadly missed Sue very much, he seemed content in retirement.

  7. I remember Allan back in 1972 when I was a cadet playing rugby for the force. I recall him as a centre who once chipped the ball over his opposite number, rounded him, caught the ball safely and scored a try. I believe that he tried to emulate this feat on many occasions thereafter but was unable to match his memorable score. He was a great bloke to talk to in the clubhouse after the match and was one of many that made me so welcome in the force rugby club.

  8. I have known Alan since joining the Police Cadets in 1963 when we worked together at Bingham Police Station. We never again worked together but remained friends throughout. He was a gentleman with a nice sense of humour and a pleasure to be with. He will be greatly missed. Condolences from my wife and I to his family.

    RIP
