One of the best bosses that I had the privilege to work for (albeit a short time), and no doubt THE best Chief Constable that Notts Police never had.
As a young Probationer, the first time that I met Mr Stapleford was at the Goose Fair in the early 1980’s. In the “snap box” that we were all given was a packet of fruit gums. I’d just put one in my mouth when he appeared around a corner. With a smile on his face, he said “Ah, eating on duty young man. That’s got to be worth giving one to the Chief Superintendent!”
Hi Many thanks for this email, but how do I actually access the Book and the funeral details? Kind regards Lawson Main “Slightly more redirected than retired.”

I never worked closely for John but came across him many times during my service. He was a superb ‘gaffer’ who always led from the front & was respected by all who knew him. He had that amazing ability to know your name even if he had never met you!! He was friendly to all & always kept you on your toes. He always reminded me of my faux pas representing Central Division in the life saving competition when I covered up the life belt with my uniform to save it getting wet!!
RIP John keep everyone in order up there
My Boss at SOU and Central. A real gentleman who always knew your name and what you said in previous conversations so you certainly pull the wool over his eyes. Such a sad loss the force and humanity. R.I.P Sir.
Condolences to the family.
I can’t make the funeral but will be there in spirit.
Respect. All senior officers had my respect. They had it because I gave it to their rank, sadly not always to the individual who held the rank, although thankfully they were in the minority. John though had my respect as a brilliant boss, as someone whom I trusted, who was honest, who listened. he was fair and he was a gentleman. I had a few bosses whom I reckon were at the very top and John undoubtedly was one of them.
I had the pleasure of serving under him a number of times and working with him when I was JBB Secretary.
I also had the pleasure of knowing his son Richard.
Rest in Peace John. Thoughts with all the family. Sorry I cannot be there.
Many have said what a true gentleman John Stapleford was and I add my name to that list. Never intimidating when in his presence, compassionate, empathetic, pragmatic, sincere, helpful, understanding. A leader of the highest calibre, a role model for the young and aspiring. What a man to have at your side or behind you. I owe much to this man who backed me and inspired me, gave me self belief and ultimately gave me some great advice. Thank you John. If only they all could have been like you. RIP Sir and my sincere condolences to your family.
I never worked with John but his integrity and sincerity is a lasting legacy in the job.
I knew John through his true passion; football. I loved his enthusiasm and passion for the game. Week in, week out he’d be there cheering us on and never being afraid to offer his expertise as to why we were getting hammered by the opposition 😂
A true gentlemen and a character who will be sadly missed 😢
A true gentleman and a pleasure to have worked with many years ago.
RIP John
