I am saddened to hear of John’s passing. We were neighbours when I was a boy and I looked up to John. He was a major influence on me joining the police. We didn’t see each other very much in his later years but he would call in and say hello if he was back in the country. My sincere condolences to all of his family.

I worked with John on the Underwater Search Unit in the late 60’s and he was an adventurer even then. We were allowed an extra three days leave each year so that we could dive in clear water for a change and visited both Wales and Scotland where John used to make his beer money by hand catching lobsters and selling them to the locals. John, may your adventures continue unabashed up above.

I first met John when I was a pupil at a local primary school. Pc Ward as we referred to him would come into school and on occasions give us practical lessons about Water Safety. We would look forward to his visits on this subject as he would make the lessons fun getting us to throw ropes to other pupils lying prone on the school hall floor pretending to be in difficulty in the water . With his friendly manner he was very popular often leaving with a collection of paintings and letters of thanks presented by the pupils after his visits. It was several years later I joined the Police as a Cadet and was posted to Retford Police Station. I recall how pleased I was at the time to see that Pc Ward was still working there and I reminded him of his visits to my school. I thank John for his words of words of wisdom passed on to myself and fellow pupils which have stayed with me and feel certain that the input that John gave in my school and to others he visited over the years did save the lives of children in Nottinghamshire. My condolences to Johns family at this difficult time.
