I am so sorry to hear of John’s passing. We worked together at Station Street, Radford Road and Traffic. He was a good boss, always approachable and friendly. He took me sailing on one occasion but I don’t think I made a good impression as I wasn’t invited back.
Enjoy sailing with the stars John and keep that main sheet tight!
Deepest condolences to all the family.
RIP John.

So sad to read of John’s unexpected passing. He was a really nice individual. I last saw him at a senior officers mess at Stafford, just before he did the right thing and moved down to Salcombe for a life of sailing, his favourite pastime.

John was my boss and TD(N).
He was in post to manage the department, not to be Mr popular. I liked him. I knew where I stood with him.
I often wished I could have seen him sail. I know he was passionate about sailing and he spoke of his experiences fondly.
I have many good memories under ‘Neavo’.
My sincere condolences to Helen and the rest of the family.

Such sad News, he was such a nice man, a real Gent and showed he cared for his staff. He personally contacted me when I had dealt with a difficult sudden death of an infant to ensure that I was OK. He wasn’t even my Superintendent at the time and it was in an era when there was no counselling. His show of concern for my welfare was of itself a great help and stays with me to this day. Rest in peace Sir.

Extremely sad news. First met John as I was an Aid to CID at Hucknall Div. CID around 1970. His good advice and guidance then served me well as a detective until retirement 30 years later.
Met him a few times since, usually in John Lewis for coffee. He never changed, a smile, a memory, a laugh, always with a twinkle in his eye. Lovely man.
Condolences to all of Johns’ family, a great loss.

I echo previous comments which reflect the extremely high esteem in which John was held. One of the best ‘bosses’ I had the privilege of working with. Also had many meetings with him post retirement when he worked for ‘Tracker’ – he always found a way to get the Traffic Dept kit for no cost! Many condolences to the family. He will be missed by us all.

I’ve had the privilege of knowing John for over 50 years since we were on CID together. He has always been a fantastic friend, as over the years we watched our families flourish. We have enjoyed holidays together with my family and John’s lovely wife Elaine ,and children Helen and Robert ,who is my godson. John’s policing and management talents were rightly recognised and he had a stellar career. He always treated friends and colleagues with understanding and humour and was always great company. The morning I was telephoned by Robert and received the devastating news of John’s death was one of the saddest days of my life ,and has been a great blow. Fortunately, Elaine has the loving support of Helen and Robert and son-in-law Andy. I know that they all have been comforted by all the kind comments of condolence contained in these pages. We will greatly miss John but the close bonds of our families will remain to comfort us.
